How it works

From unpaid helper to paid caregiver

You already know your parent best. We give you the training, pay and support to keep doing it.

  1. 01

    Tell us about your family

Answer a few quick questions, then talk with us for 20 minutes. We help you see whether Pelargos fits your situation.

  2. 02

Get set up as their caregiver

We hire you through Pelargos, run a background check and give you hands-on training. A nurse visits to build a care plan with you and your parent.

  3. 03

Care for them and get paid

Log your visits on your phone and get paid every two weeks, like any job. Payroll and taxes are handled for you.

  4. 04

    Never do it alone

A nurse checks in regularly, respite help is there when you need a break, and siblings get clear statements of every hour.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Don't see yours? Ask us when we call. We're happy to talk it through.

Who pays for the care?

Care is paid for privately, not by Medicaid. For many families, the cost is covered by a capped care line on the parent’s home, through a local credit union. Nothing is due month to month, and it’s repaid when the home is eventually sold or refinanced. Long-term care insurance and VA benefits can help pay too.

How much will I be paid?

Pay is set in your family’s care plan based on the help your parent needs. We expect most caregivers to earn around $18 to $22 an hour, paid every two weeks.

Do I need to be a nurse or CNA?

No. This is everyday, non-medical care: bathing, dressing, meals, medication reminders, rides and keeping your parent company. We train you, and a nurse oversees the care plan.

My parent might qualify for Medicaid. Is this for us?

If your parent qualifies, Utah’s Medicaid programs may be able to pay you directly, and we’ll point you to the right place to apply. Pelargos is built for families who have too much for Medicaid but can’t afford $30 or more an hour for an agency.

Will getting paid hurt Medicaid eligibility later?

Every family gets a written care agreement prepared with an independent elder-law attorney, at fair rates, for care that’s actually logged. That’s the standard way to keep payments to a family caregiver from being treated as gifts.

What about my brothers and sisters?

Fairness is built in. Every hour and every payment is recorded, and siblings can get regular statements, so no one has to wonder who did what.

Who is eligible?

Right now we’re enrolling families in Utah where a parent needs help with daily activities at home, but not round-the-clock skilled nursing. Living nearby or with your parent is ideal.

About the name

The stork's law

Pelargos is the ancient Greek word for stork. The Greeks believed young storks cared for their parents in old age, bringing them food and even carrying them when their wings grew weak. They had a word for this kind of love returned, antipelargia. Rome later wrote it into law as the Lex Ciconaria, the stork's law, which said grown children should support their aging parents.

Millions of adult children already live by the stork's law, often while cutting back at work and paying for it themselves. Pelargos is a Utah company built to change that. We help families keep care in the family, with the training, pay and support that caregivers deserve.
